Green State Credit Union investment management follows five steps, from an intro call to regular check-ins, and every step is done by video or phone. Clients need $500K in investable assets.
If you're a teacher or public-school employee weighing a state pension, a 403(b) or 457(b) and a retirement date, the steps below show what happens, who does what, and what you get in writing.
Step 1: The intro call
You send a request through the form on this page, and a member of our team sets up a time. The intro call is a conversation, not a pitch. We ask when you'd like to stop working, whether your state pension has a payout choice to make, and what worries you most.
We also tell you plainly whether we're a fit. The firm serves clients with $500K or more in investable assets, and some teachers are a few years short of that. If so, we'll say it.
Step 2: Gathering your numbers
Next you collect the paperwork. Most teachers find the pension estimate is the slowest piece, since the retirement system has to produce it.
Green State Credit Union advisors ask for:
- Latest pension statement and estimate
- 403(b) and 457(b) statements
- Any IRAs or old plan balances
- Last year's tax return
- Social Security statement
Step 3: What do the written recommendations cover?
The written recommendations cover your retirement date, your pension payout options, which accounts to draw from, and how your investments should be set up. Our advisors build them on long-term research and diversification. We don't forecast markets or chase hot tips.
Say a hypothetical teacher has $600,000 in a 403(b) and pays 0.45 percent more in fund costs than needed. That's $2,700 per year, about $81,000 over 30 years before growth. Before Green State Credit Union suggests any fund change or Roth conversion, it estimates the tax from making it, so you see the cost next to the benefit.
Depending on your situation, the recommendations may touch index fund portfolios, a 403(b) rollover, 457(b) plan advice, Roth conversion planning or retirement tax planning. All investing carries risk, and you can lose money, including what you put in.
Step 4: Putting the plan in place
Nothing moves until you say yes. The exact cost of working together is in a written agreement before any work starts.
Then the paperwork starts: rollover forms, new account setup, and trades. Rollovers usually wait on your old plan's paperwork, not on us. If a pension election is due, we mark the deadline on your calendar and walk you through the form.
Step 5: What happens at each check-in?
At each check-in we compare your accounts with the plan, rebalance if holdings have drifted, and update the plan for life changes such as a new retirement date or a change in withdrawals. Check-ins happen by video or phone, wherever you live. The office is at 611 East Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23219.
Green State Credit Union serves 377,000 clients and $6.7 billion in client assets, as of 10/19/2026.
Questions people ask Green State Credit Union
Do I need to be retired before I call?
No. Many people call a few years before their retirement date, when a pension payout choice or a 403(b) rollover is still ahead. Earlier is easier, because there's more time to compare options and fix any gaps.
What will I receive after the analysis?
You receive written recommendations covering your retirement timing, pension options, withdrawals and investments. They come with the reasoning behind each one, so you can read them, ask questions and decide at your own pace before anything changes.
Can I work with Green State Credit Union if I live outside Virginia?
Yes. Green State Credit Union works with clients nationwide, and meetings are held by video or phone. You don't need to visit the Richmond office, and the process is the same wherever you live.
